Not sure if I may be late when it comes to this documentary I discovered last night at the Euclid Public Library, but to my surprise the first thing that I noticed was the city of Cleveland on the front cover.  So like any Clevelander, I investigated further to see what this documentary was and why I had never heard of it before. It is quite obvious once I started reading the summary on the back and then saw that the title of the DVD is “On the Down Low.”

The documentary goes inside the lives of four normal gentlemen living in the ghetto streets of Cleveland. These men document their journey of living a down low life and why it is so hard to be who they want to be and come out in a city like Cleveland.

Of the four men documented are Kerwin (pictured above), a self proclaimed bisexual who comes out to his military father and long time female friend. There is also Billy, a father who works and takes care of his teenage son but frequently escapes to the Gay hot spots around Cleveland to get fulfillment eventhough he admits, the “best sex was with my baby mama”. The third man featured in the video is Antonio aka Toniqua, an ex-convict who claims he developed his gay, down low life style during his seven year prison sentence. The last man to be documented was Ray, a fairly young ”thug” who lives with his gay father in the projects and admits to only having feelings for drag queens and Femme queens with a “pretty face”. All four of these men live their lives not being able to be who they truly are because of the ridicule that comes along with the feelings one can not control.

Throughout the movie, they showcase the wonderful night life of downtown Cleveland and the less delicate roads of the low income housing. These men are only a very minuscule percentage of millions of men who hide who they really are in Cleveland. This is a world wide thing. It is no secret that there is a rampant gay scene in C-town. There is a Gay pride weekend every summer which entails a parade in downtown Cleveland. I am not the one to judge these men and what they do, neither is anyone else. But what I do not understand is why some of these men go through great lengths to hide there true selves and hurt innocent females who think they may be in love and eventually have babies with these DL men in the process. In Cleveland, you will be ridiculed regardless. Either you are gay, fat, a snitch, too stuck up, whatever the case may be, people will always find a reason to chastise someone. That doesn’t mean you should hide who you truly are and hurt people in the process.

I am a firm believer of living everyday to it’s fullest and I know that the longer one has to hide who they truly are, the more they hurt themselves. Yeah, these men are DL but only to themselves. Just in one second of hearing these men talk, I knew they were gay. I worked with Billy back in 2002 and I already knew he was gay. It is just somethings that are apparent and easily give away a gay man’s secret . Even though you may think no one knows your gay, they do but the majority of people could care less. So the moral of this blog is be yourself. And to those women in Cleveland that thought the DL lifestyle was just a Hollywood thing, you better check out this movie and do it quick.

My point is you are a millionaire Ne-yo,… Why do you feel you must explain yourself if you know none of these things are true.  I mean the fact that you take time out of your busy schedule to address these issues makes it seem as though you feel like you have to prove to the world that you are not gay…You don’t see John Legend walking around like…”go get my new cd, by the way, I’m not gay..” It’s like who cares and any REAl person, anybody with any common sense knows what these f*d upgossip blogs are about.
